Gauge Sender Question: Water Temperature

In an attempt to use the dash gauge while using the supplemental (and more specific) autometer gauge, I used a special electrical connector that allows me to connect both gauges to the same stock sender. This resulted in something odd! The dash gauge read barely anything, and the autometer was reading 250 degrees, pegged. I removed the autometer sender, and reconnected the stock wire straight to the stock sender, and the dash gauge reads normally again.
The autometer gauge came with it's own sender. Are the two senders calibrated differently? The autometer gauge has a range of 100 degrees F to 250 dgrees F. Does anyone know what the range of the stock gauge is?
I did a search on the BB, and someone mentioned installing the autometer sender where the coolant bleedoff is. Does this work?
Thanks!
Mike
