Hey all!
if this isn't performance related, I know know what is ( :
Friday (4/19) through Sunday (4/21) Hershey, PA brought back it's famous "Hershey Hillclimb" which was last raced back in 1973, I believe. This includes a track which is about a mile and ahalf long (I think) and all pre1973 sport cars, meeting strict guidlines, driven by drivers with competition licenses. The paved trail, barely wide enough for this tiny-width cars, goes up hill halfway, makes a huge U turn, then goes back down the hill. The best part is, I can see the track from my house! Not to mention the HUGE Porsche-rally held in the Hersheypark parking lot (also visible from my front porch), just 1/4 mile away from the Hillclimb. What a great weekend.
Simply the coolest thing I have ever seen. As European rally as it can get! 1960's Mini Coopers, one 1960's Porsche, and about 30 other rally sports cars. And oh yeh, a few SAABs!
A bright orange 93, a mustard yellow 96, and a maroon Sonnet. Those two-stroke rally-style engines are the nicest sounding things I've heard next to a 2002 Ferrari engine. They screamed so loud!
I talked to the 93 driver for a good bit of time. He will be attending the Saab Convention in Ohio this fall, bringing his 93, and giving a speech on Saab racing, etc. He was a member of the "Vintage Saab Racing Club". His car had a full rollcage put into the back, removed the entire interior, and the orange paint looked brand new. Side mounted exhaust tip. The car was amazing. The most interesting part was, he only spent $2,300 on EVERYTHING. The car, suspension, performance, paint job, etc, etc. He said it made most of the other race drivers pretty mad because they spend 10's of thousands on their cars. I'm not sure what his time was on the course, but it looked like he did pretty well from a spot I had on the course (obviously on the big dangerous U turn!).
Unfortunatly the 96 and the Sonnet were having their time trials done while I was there, and didn't have a chance to talk to their drivers or check out the cars that well.
I met Marc Fails (Central Penn Saab Club president) at the Porsche-rally, and he gave me a LOT of good ideas for my 90 SPG. Awesome guy! I almost bought a Porsche Boxter exhaust tip to put on my car, but he sold me a 9-3 Rectangle SS exhaust tip instead. I couldn't resist.
Old Saabs, Old Porsches, new Porsches, it couldn't have gotten any better..
if anyone else was there, or wants to know anything else about it, drop me an email!
The Hershey Uphill Climb link is below (lots of information!). The Uphill will now be held annually from now on, and continue to grow in popularity. My girlfriend's uncle is the head Chairman of the event, so he was telling me all about it. He will be racing a 1963(?) MG next year I believe.
cya!!
