AMM / MAF Burn-off Cycle

I'm trying to use a Saab/Bosch MAF in another application, and I'm trying to understand how the self-cleaning operation works, as I'm trying to re-produce the function in a manual fashion. I know that the PCM activates a 4v circuit for 1 second after shut-down. So here's my question... Must the 12v running voltage supply be shut on or off when this 4v burn-off cycle is activated? It would make life easier if I could have the meter powered with it's usual 12v and just activate the burn-off cycle via a switch with the key in the "on" position, but motor not running. I've also been told it doesn't really matter if I trigger the burn-off cycle with 4v - 5v or 12v would do as well. In fact, it appears that the Nissan 300ZX (which uses a Bosch 3" AMM), triggers the circuit with 12v.
