With the T5's (no air mass meter), you can add a MBC and get more power and faster boost onset. The knock is controlled by the ECU with mixture and timing. The 1994 to 1999 NG900's are working very well with MBC, and some 9K's with the T5.
You engine needs to be in good condition and well maintained. You need to make some other mods to reduce the intake and exhaust restrictions and I encourage the use of Mobil One 10W30 and better filters. Use high octane pump gas and keep your injectors clean, Techron Concentrate 3X per year suggested.
Most MBC installs eliminate the functionality of the BPC valve. You can install a MBC in series with the BPC and get better boost response, but no increase in boost pressure. This will probably increase the boost in the lower gears as well. Either way, there are no issues with knocking with a T5 with a well maintained engine.
