The 2.3 is derrived from the 2.0, which originally has its roots with Triumph...

When the 99 was first produced Saab sourced its powerplant from the 1.7 liter Triumph 4 cyl engine. Lots of trouble was discovered though with the angled head-bolts. A redesign made it wholly Saab, and also produced the 1.8 liter engine.

That evolved into the 2.0 (1985 cc) "B" engine. In 1977/78 Saab "slapped a turbo" on it. With the confines getting tighter under the hood the 99 body shell was redesigned thus was born the 900...

The H engine was introduced in either '83 or '84 and introduced an improved water pump assembly, a 5 speed transmission (possibly earlier than the "H"). '84 or '85, depending on the market, saw the intro of the 16 valve head.

The non-turbo 900"S" was uprated to 2.1 liters by boring the cylinders, and the 2.3 turbo for the 9000 by boring and stroking the crank. Balance shafts were added to offset the additional rotating bass that the 2.3 introduced. Also this larger engine negated the ability to fit the C900 transmission properly so it was never offered in the Classic 900...

Not aware of any balance shaft issues or redesign (not to say that there weren't, just not aware of it...), however no doubt packaging redesign was happening with the 9-5 (I know for example that the intercooler is smaller in the 9-5). Also Saab continually tinkered with different turbochargers (Mitsu TD-05, TE-05, and of course Garrett).

So if you look back far enough, you could say you're driving a Triumph engined Opel... ;-P

Surely not the end-all and be-all of the Saab engine history, but I hope it helps...

'88 SPG (Viggen BPV, Trent/Malpassi RRFPR, tweaked APC and solenoid valve)

'97 900 Talladega (Abbott lowering springs, Saab Sport Exhaust, Abbott ECU and wastegate actuator, Abbott Viggen Rescue Pack, Forge BPV, SAS rear Swaybar, Zimmerman Cross Drilled front rotors, AutoMeter boost/vac gauge, Viggen Intercooler)

Gone but not forgotten:
