Looking for 94 9k Aero Exhaust Advice

Last week my dad took the Aero in for inspection in NH, and apparently (I have very little info on this, just a short phone conversation with my dad, since I am not currently in NH with him or the car) it was will not pass until the muffler is replaced. It seems he was quoted something in the $400-500 to get this remedied, though I don't know exactly what parts and labor that involved. Would it be worth it at this point to look into some kind of stainless steel cat back system, or some other sort of upgrade over the stock setup? I wasn't looking to drop the cash for everything at this point, like, say a downpipe and new cat etc...but I want to do more in the future, and if some of it has to be replaced now, why get stock parts I'd want to replace later anyway. Is my logic flawed here? Are there certain exhausts to stay away from or certain ones people have had great experiences with? I'm obviously not shooting for 400hp here, but I'll probably be looking into an ECU upgrade in the next year or so.
Thanks for any thought you might have!
Karl
