Well, the article provides a basic analysis, but I object to the author forcing the silly point of view that the brakes don't stop the vehicle. For any situation where traction is not exceeded, the brakes do stop the vehicle. And until you are getting to the tractive limits of your tires, upgraded pads can improve braking.
Note that for opposing pistons as with the Saab rear brakes, that the clamping force developed is no different than a floating caliper with a single pistion of the same diameter. The text in the article could mislead some as it talks about a two piston floating caliper with both pistons on the same side.
For a given brake pad, slotted rotors will require high petal forces to get the same effect, until the pads are getting heated enough that the slotting reduced gas fade to a greater extent than slots increase the petal forces required. But as the amount of surface are lost to slotting would be around 10%, the benefits of slotting could be significant when the brakes are been heated by agressive driving and braking.
With high performance tires, on dry pavement with my 95SET getting to the traction limits of the tires when braking is nearly impossible.
Note that for sudden stops, stiffer springs and shocks will reduce weight transfer dynamics and will reduce the tendancy of the ABS to unload the rear brakes.
