I also thought the saab is a LOT cheaper. $39K vs upper $40's I thought?
Anyways, both excellent cars & my biggest complaint with the S4 is the extremely cramped interior. There is simply no room in the back seats!
In regards to the 6 speed, yes, it would be nice if saab does that someday & hopefully with the next gen 9-3 they will. From what I gather, the 6th gear is not a gear for top speed or passing but is geared to give lower RPM's at given speeds vs 5th, kind of like a overdrive. Many times car mags will do top speed runs using 5th due to the gearing be to tall for 6th to max out.
To me what makes more sense in the viggen is AWD. So the car mags can't bitch about torque steer as well as the motor can be let loose to produce all 258 ft lb of torque in 1st, weeeeeeeee
