T3 turbo, spool up faster, different versions?

Since my wife won't let me buy a used/rebuilt/new Mitsu turbo for my daily driver. Something about a kid on the way...............
What is the history behind the T3 turbo? My understanding is that when it was introduced it was kinda/sorta big for the motor/car. But, yet Saab used the turbo until '91. Bottom line: I want better low end/mid range. The T3 has long legs that I don't need in city driving. Is there a T3 from different years with a smaller cold end? Did someone like a Dodge Colt use the T3? I'm looking for the smallest T3, I guess. Any good web sites?
I'm currently running a big K&N with stock 1985 IC. Stock exhaust. But, boy would I love to drill out the exhaust/waste gate plate to except duel pipes to the stock flange. My current summer project.
TIA,
Ed S
