From my experience of a tranny replacement on my 88 SPG this summer, the engine must be seperated from the tranny to allow room for the flywheel to be removed. Of course you have to remove the clutch and 8 flywheel bolts. A good thing to do when replacing the flywheel is to replace the pilot bearing too.
