any reason this should not be removed? on larger engines (shipboard engines) it is standard to have a crankcase ventilation system. this removes potentially combustible vapors from the crankcase. it is such a big deal that when crankcase vacuum is lost, the engine is shut down.
this is how i view the pcv valve on the valve cover. when the engine is running, there is a constant draw of air from the crankcase (through the valve cover). therefore if this is disconnected, even just vented to atmosphere or a collection container, then there is no vacuum to draw the air out.
my main motivation in this question is to remove the oily vapor and oil from the intake system which coats the piping and ic (reducing efficiency) and increasing the possibility of predetonation. however, i am hesitant to simply remove the system. due to my experience with larger engines i am not fully convinced that this system (pcv) was installed by saab strictly for emissions.
any comments/suggestions are welcome. thanks.
