The classic minis ran on rubber "cones" for a suspension. A harsh right compared to most but they handle great. The cooper 'S' and De Luxe models did come with a smoother riding "Hydro" or "wet" suspension though it was still no caddy my any means. Minis are great cars and i am actually currently restoring an original '65 Austin Mini Cooper 'S' 1275cc. Can't wait till its done. http://www.littlebrit.net
