phil has it right on with the painting. take your time sanding and priming, it will show. as for the mesh. this is MY DIY: version 1.0
lay out your desired grid of mesh and use the black-plastic-fin insert to trace your mesh-insert (you sould should have to remove a few plastic pins and snaps to get it ou). cut it out, but not too small, you can always trim it if it is too big. paint the mesh if you like, i suggest rust proof paint, because it will rust very quikly outdoors. to mount the new grill right you will have to cut the bottum half of the plastc-fin insert off and glue it to the inside of the grill (or not and see what happens when you try to mount it). this should get you started. good luck.
PS: take your time finding a paint color that matches the body. it looks MUCH better when it does match.
