I am sure someone else can give you a better explanation, but I think this is how it works.
The O2 sensor measures second to second if the engine is running rich or lean. This is why at idle your idle may go up and down slightly. The stock O2 sensor is only able to read richness or leaness to a certain point on either end. The wide band O2 sensor goes pass these spects. The stock O2 sensor was designed for stock boosting and stock fueling. When someone is boosting 20 psi, has a set of 30# injectors and a rrfpr the stock spects are not enough. That extra added fuel and boost need to be read by something that can go past what the car was designed to do.
So when someone is trying to tune their rrfpr with an air/fuel gauge, this becomes very helpful.
I think this is how it works, Ubipa tried to explain it to me once, he knew more about it.
Hope this helps!
