Pre-ignition starts a flame-front in one part of the cylinder, while the spark starts one in another. When these flame-fronts collide, that's when you get detonation and it is the resultant shock-wave that does the damage. My understanding is that NO simply provides more oxygen to the combustion process which, along with extra fuel, provides more power, but I thought the cycle was the same as normal.
