So the ball-spring prevents premature opening of the wastegate, so the turbine gets more flow and the turbo spools up at its characteristic rate which can be much much faster. So with the factory BPC setup, don't talk about turbo lag, you don't even know what that is. You have the boost lag which is mostly induced by the control system.
Saab installs low ineria turbo's in there vehicles to get better response. Well thats half true. They have realy just installed a turbo that is really too small and it is inefficient at the higher cfms and starts to deliver a lot of hot air. And Saab sales pitches talk about getting max torque at 2200 rpm. Thats a pile of crap! The boost lag won't let you get anywhere near that. If you get on a mountain slope you might be able to get that boost at that rpm, but you would have to try like heck to do that. That torque claim is something that they were able to do at steady state on a dyno. Folks have expectations that need to be satified when things are dynamic, not steady state. And if you achieved the max boost on a long steep slope, realize that you acceleration is now effectly zero. Where is that going to get you. Steady speed on a slope.. WOW. OK, end of Saab ranting.
