The pump is self priming. I have set it up 2ft above the water supply and it primed itself. I haven't installed it yet though. Shurflow recommend that if you mount it vertically to have the motor above the head so in case of leaks the motor won't be ruined.
During your initial install, bolt up the pump and connect the water lines to the resevoir then before connecting the line to the valve or nozzle turn on the pump until the pump primes itself, then connect the line to the valve and nozzle.
Also, I would highly suggest getting the head I listed below that has an internal bypass and 100psi switch or just an internal bypass head rated at 100psi. Shurflow recommends using a bypass if you think the pump will be turning on and off in increments around 2secs due to very constrictive or small feed lines. The bypass head will prevent the motor from burning out and also provide more precision.
