i felt just like you when i first did this. if you leave the stock gap in the diaphram, you will loose bottom end due to exessive retard. the stock retard dumps in completely around 3-5 psi resulting in a flat spot in the power. your best bet is to completely eliminate the stock retard (close the gap to zero without causing movement the other way), then use the btm to get linear timing retard from atmosphere on up.
the way i finally figured out the best way to rig up the btm was when i disconnected it and reconnected the stock timing controls. then i used a hand pump on the diaphram and mapped the timing curve. then i reconnected the btm and defeated the stock retard. i set the pressure valve to 5 psi and used the btm to get all the timing in at the 5 psi setting. i took it for a spin and it felt just like stock. then i slowly raised the valve setting and made adjustments to the btm to make sure all the timing was in by the valve setting. when i got to the point of apc kickback, i knew to back it down a bit and that was the final set point. it takes time, but if you do it this way, it is easy to see what is going on and you have complete control over the changes. less likely to chase your tail...:) good luck.
