it can be done on your own, but takes patience and and eye for exactness. gregg c did his and has seen great results.
as far as the head gasket, copper is not necessary unless you are planning on running gobbs of boost. not only that, but they are hard to get to seal correctly, not worth the effort, imho. best bet is to o-ring the block and stay with the stock headgasket. that's what steve y and i have done.
valve springs are not necessary either. scanwest ran a turbo rally car upwards of 8000 rpm and never had any problem with valve float. if you are looking to spend $ and have certain things on your car, then by all means get all of them. but if you are looking for the necessary things to help performance, look with a cautious eye. the companies that sell these parts need to make money, so of course you 'need' the parts... just my 2 cents.
