Greetings. My kids' legs are outgrowing the rear seat in my beloved SPG, the Stealtbomber. I'll need more rear legroom soon. Help me make a good choice. Please post your thoughts as to whether a late-model (95-97) 9000 turbo or a 9-5 turbo is the better platform for significant performance mods without sacrificing basic reliability or roadability of the car. Of course, an Aero in either model would be the perferred starting point, if possible, but if not, I'll want to build up through that level, so the degree of modifications necessary to Aero-ize is relevant.
The goal is a "sweet road racer" that also serves as a reliable daily driver and a safe kid-hauler for weekend jaunts. I don't drag-race and I rarely cruise below 2500 or 3000 rpm; goals include wide middle-to-upper rpm powerband (3000 - 5500 or 6000, don't want power disappearing at 4500 and don't need lower end response ). I don't need the fastest car in town, in the state or on the planet... but I gotta have that RUSH and the silly grin on my face when I get the chance to stick it and eat up backcountry roads or fly over mountain passes.
Please don't tell me WHICH car unless you also explain WHY you say so. I need advice and insight, not just votes. (This ought to generate a lively discussion!)
FYI: I modified the Stealthbomber with the same "sweet road racer" target, with extensive help and invaluable insight from a dozen long-term performance bbs veterans. Her mods are posted below, to give an idea of the general target. Let me again thank each of you who helped me re-engineer the Stealthbomber from a lively road car to a lusty road racer.
Thanks, and Cheers to all!
Jim Watts
The Stealthbomber: 87 SPG, Modestly Modified
(Open K&N, 24 lb injectors, 3.0 bar FPR, sport exhaust,
rewired APC, SPG9 AID, MBC in-line between turbo and
BCV for quick spool-up, solid SD motor mounts,
recently rebuilt motor and tranny with upgraded pinion,
braided s/s brake lines. "Final" planned steps: rebuild turbo, hooter uypgrade, add poly bushing on suspension, upgrade intercooler and plumbing, add additional cold air feed to filter area. Maybe I'll even fix the blasted radio someday.)
