someone may have to clarify it here but i thought after '85 or so, the tranny's got the larger pinion bearing. so you should be set.
as far as durability of them, you'll hear differing schools of thought. imho, it all depends on how you drive it. if you intend to do a lot of drag racing and neutral drops at stoplights, then you'll have trouble keeping any tranny in the car. if you have a lot of power, but ensure a smooth transition into power and not stomp on it in the corners, you'll be able to keep it longer. fact is, tranny durability is directly proportional to the abuse you give it. you can use better quality lubricants to help, but the abuse will determine how long it really lasts in the end. hope this helps...
