That sounds consistant with the experiences with the 2.0 NG and 9-3 engines.
You are seeing two things. One is the change to a clean gapped plug, and perhaps a change from the heat range. The 6's will remain quite clean.
Did you happen to put air in your tires while doing the plugs? With the dropping temperatures, tire pressures are down and this will increase fuel consumption. I found that the pressure changes since the heat of July and August was very significant.
Now the plugs will stay clean. So you will find that they will last longer. But now gap erosion becomes the issue. But a regap will be all that you need in the future when the plugs look clean. .039" is the nominal plug spec. But the recommended range has a + and -ve tolerance band. I, and some others gap to .035 and let the gap erode open towards the .039 figure, instead of starting there and geting wider than .039 from the get-go. If you are tracking your mpg's that well, you can judge the effect of the .035 gap on that.
Tracking mpg trends this time of year with changing temperatures, tire pressures and humidity will be difficult. And lots of us will soon be getting winter blend fuels with higher volitility as well. If more alchohols are added to fight condensation and fuel icing, then the energy content of the fuel will drop, and mpg's will go down. I tanked up once with Texaco 10% ethanol. I noted that on the pump, but really needed to get fuel at that time and place. My mpgs' really sucked on that tank! I feel that I was robbed.
