In stock condition (before mods), my 87 SPG handily ran up to 133 at 5800 rpm; I backed off just before redline fuel cutoff (6k) right around 135. After substantial mods, I'd like to try it now, but for now I'm in the (cursed) midwest where there simply are too many people, farms and critturs on and along the roads... I ain't comfortable with out-west speeds here in the farm belt. Sigh. Wrong turn at Denver.
I think the primary limitation is gearing; unless geared higher, you could drop drag off the scale and still not get above cutoff. But you SHOULD get better response at available speeds.
Even if you bypass fuel cutoff, unless you've also done tremendous modifications on breathing and top end performance, you're still maxing out capacity. Gearing, again, would be the way to go faster... but there probably is a trade-off in response at lower speeds.
After weighing this carefully, I decided to focus on performance curve below 130 as that area more likely to be enjoyed more often. I can't outrun the police radio and helicopters, anyway.
Of course, that doesn't stop my fantasizing about a 6 speed gearbox and some radical airflow work.
Good luck.
