Actually, Dr. Strauss I see your point. Actually, I live in MA as well and drive on the Pike quite a bit. My impression is that when you get in that medium to heavy traffic that seems to move along at 70MPH, even in 55 zones, you have the benefit of "herd immunity." As a MA driver, I really never go over 74MPH in 65 zones and try not to go over 70 in 55s.
I can see that maybe someone who is travelling during non-peak hours, where there really isn't any herd immunity, would still like to drive at that same ~70MPH speed on most of these roads. I guess in my mind these detectors are pretty expensive, and from what I've heard have little chance of stopping MA state police. Even at non-peak times, I seriously doubt you would be pulled over if you keep it inside of 10MPH over the speed limit, which is essentially the same speed you'll get in pretty heavy traffic anyway.
