Mobil 1 10W30 will not do the/that job.
Theory indicates that a thick oil will create higher losses. This in only true for pumping losses and journal bearings. But there are things like cams, valve stems and pistons where the friction is determined by more than than fluid wedge viscosity dominated type interations.
Example: 95SET 145000 miles current.
I swithed from Mobil 1 10W30 to Mobil Delvac 1 (5W40 only), which meets the same gasoline standards, but is marketed mostly as a diesel oil, of which it is one of the very best. Both are true synthetics. My 95SET runs quieter and smoother on the Delvac and my mpg's increased by 6%. That fuel savings translated into more than enough $$ to justify the cost increment.
So with the smoother running and better mpg's, I don't need a dyno to tell me that there is a performance benefit. But this is one of those things that will be too small to register on the seat'0'pants dyno. I was working on the vehicles yesterday and I noted how smooth and quiet the idle is on the 95SET!
Now the stuff that you saw on TV, was probably an A/B test where the reference oil was a conventional dyno oil. I would not dispute the results at all. But I think that tests like that need to be used to differentiate one synthetic oil from another. I have one very positive data point of that nature.
I think that all mature engines, which have greater running clearances, may all very well do better with a 5W40 or 10W40 compared to a nnW30 oil.
Don't be afraid to experiment with better and thicker oils. If you don't notice a difference, the at most you are out of pocket the difference in the costs of the oils, which is minor. A harmful result seems impossible.
Use better filters too. Mobil One filters are very good, but Pure One filters are very much more affordable and may be just as good.
