The DC Saab Clubs' Autocross yesterday was a resounding success. Intermitent drizzle could not put a damper on the event, though it certainly tried. 106 racers showed up (limited by terrible traffic on the beltway that caused many drivers to miss their heat spots).
My brother (85SLED) and I both drove my car, and Eric proved to be the better racer than I, turning in a 57.7 second time to my 58.5 second time for our best times of the day. The 88 SPuG did turn out to be the fastest Saab of the day :o) A nice Silver Viggen did give us a run for the money, turning in a 58.6 PFTD.
The course was the same as last year's, which provides an excellent reference for the benefits of the improvements made to the car this year. The changes:
Water Injection
ECU Chip from Ragnar
Modified Turbo (new)
Hoosier Racing Slicks (R3S03s)
Springs (Intrax)
Shocks (Bilsteins)
These changes netted a whopping 3 seconds on a 60 second course! One problem that I should have corrected before the race was the need for new spark plugs (and maybe wires). A slight miss appeared during my last two runs, leading me to believe that my running rich for so long (until recently!) fouled a plug or two. My last run was still my fastest, so I think there was more speed to be had.
We had times competitive with cars supposedly out of our class, such as M3s, Honda S2000s and 944 Turbos (we were faster than the 944 turbo, driven by a Autocross club regular).
Talladega900 (97 900 SE HOT), Nathan Pflaum (90 SPG), MichaelG (88 SPG), & Steve Chruch (73 Sonett II) also drove in the event. I'll let them post their stories if they choose to do so; everyone had a great time. Many thanks to the above for their efforts in helping to work the event; it could not have happened without you guys!
