The engine's rotating parts ideally wear off non-steel particles. For instance, the crankshaft and camshafts should throw off their bearing metal over time, not the steel of the shaft itself. That would be babbit material (mostly lead) from the crank's journals, and in the case of the classic 900 the aluminum casting that the camshafts live in. Anyone know what kind of bearing the original 9-3 camshafts use? I presume the turbine bearings are bronze. Nothing magnetic here.
Nagnetic particles would probably come from the cylider bores. Considering how long the blocks and rings last there might be damn few partcle to collect, after wear-in.
I guess if you could catch any particles to speak of, you would worry, but it doesn't seem to be a generally useful diagnostic, compared to the transmission where the gears constantly spin off steel.
