After you have applied the WD40, get out a file and file TWO opposite ends of the stripped out edges. Take out enough so that you could use a smaller sized spanner to then turn the nut.
Another trick that works before you use the spanner, is to heat the head of the nut up with a blow torch for 30 seconds or so. The iron will shrink, and release some of the tension on the nut. But this is a dangerous routine, and not to be done if gasoline vapour is any where close by!!! If you have access to an industrial soldering iron of 100 Watts or more, you can use that as well to heat the nut head up. Then use the spanner on that filed head.
Cutting off the head and drilling out the screw thread is something I have avoided, using my suggested ideas.
