Thermotec on Exhaust Manifold? Posted by SLAAB [Email] ![]() ![]() |
An earlier post suggested insulating the intake charge path to keep the intake charge cool. This got me thinking about how thermotec is more commonly used. Wrapping the headers will keep the exhaust charge hot and reduce heating of the engine compartment.
According to Thermotec:
"Wrapping the headers maintains exhaust gas heat within the header. This translates into more exhaust flow due to maintaining exhaust temperatures as it flows out of the engine. By improving the scavenging of spent gases, the engine breathes more efficiently. This reduces contamination of gases, thus allowing the engine to develop more power."
Presumably if this is true, insulating the exhaust path from manifold to turbo should reduce turbo lag.
Has anyone applied thermotec (or other insulative material) to the exhaust manifold and turbo compressor housing? What were the results?
Also, I keep reading about how catalysts need to be warmed up to be the most efficient in keeping pollution down. Why are these never insulated? It would make sense.
