Any one lightened their flywheel and not balance it?

I'm slowly planning the rebuild of my gearbox and a flywheel and new clutch seem like a good idea. I've been looking around at lightened flywheels and found out that some places don't balance them after they've been lightened. Could this be a problem? You'd think the flywheel would be balanced from the factory and if you lighten it on a lathe you remove material equally from it and it should stay in balance. But I know reality and theory are often far from eachother. Has any one had a lightened flywheel that wasn't balanced afterward and had any problems. I'm thinking it could cause vibration or premature bearing failures, or is it no big deal?
The car in question is an 88 900TC and will never be a race car, just a mild to medium tuned daily driver. I'm thinking the lighter flywheel will be easier on the gearbox as well as allowing the car to rev a little quicker.
TIA
