In terms of overall braking performance, I think you'd be hard-pressed to truly quantify the difference between earlier and later brakes. The 9000/ABS calipers are an improvement, but I really don't think worth the trouble unless you've got handbrake troubles. With vented '87 rotors, I've never had a real problem with fade or stopping power or even disc warping. The main advantage with the later brakes is substantially improved pedal feel... that *is* worth it for a car that's truly driven, but hardly an excuse IMHO for a street-driven car.
I think if I was looking to spend money I'd pick up a set of Wilwood calipers... save some weight, lose the handbrake, and keep that bolt pattern.
