in a FWD beast with that kind of power, it is way too easy to spin the tires coming out of tight turns at medium speeds. Being a smooth driver and learning to keep the turbo spooled (heel - toe action if you can swing it) makes up a ton of time! Spinning tires and overrunning corners gets you nowhere!
The biggest thing for me is learning the course. We only get 3 runs in our events, so the first run is my learning run where I try to find where I can push it and where I need to back off. This run is usually 5+ seconds slower than my FTD. The second run I try to be as smooth as I can while picking up time based on the learning run. The last run is always go as hard as I can based on the experience from the first two. I'm convinced that a 4th run would be my fastest!
As far as mods, in auto-x, the Viggen already has the power. Now you need the brakes and the suspension. The 9-3 Aero/Vector will be an autocross monster, one I plan to run someday. If you can stand it, I'd hold out to modify one of those.
