Andrew reported that he opened up a couple of normal black boxes from a few years and there were a few differences in the resistors between the boxes.
I've tried running APCs from an '88 9K, '88 SPG, and '86 900T in my '89 SPG. The only differences in performance that I've found so far are that the 9K and '86 900T only go up to 2/3 yellow. I suspect that some of it was different sensitivities on the knock and the peak boost setting.
Before Andrew made his observation, I'd assumed that the differences among the black APC boxes as far as the different part numbers go were just in the adjustments of the pots (so, in the production situation, they could just grab the boxes out of the appropriate parts bins and track them properly).
Good question about the differences between the red boxes. Maybe at some upcoming SOC, they can do a tech session with some good test equipment to check out the variations.
