The stock vacuum advance unit on the c900 retards too little and too quickly. You need to set your initial timing up arount 20 or 22 to get good off boost performance. The problem is, the stock unit does not retard enough to allow this setting. If you set a stock unit at this, you will get detonation under high boost.

The remedy is to allow you to run 20 to 22 degrees initial timing, but retard back to about 10 degrees under full boost. There are a couple ways to accompish this. You can run an aftermarket ignition system such as MSD's or you use a different vacuum advance unit. Most people run one of two choices in the different vacuum advance unit category. One is the A.I.D. from SPG9. The other is a modified vacuum advance unit from Brad (George's Imports a.k.a kcsaab.com). You can modify your own, but I think Brad's works better than a self modified one.

I was speaking to a well known professional SAAB "performance guy" about possible advance modifications and he said to me "I don't know what Brad does to them, but they sure work". I've got one of Brad's that gives me a total of 11 degrees retard and I'm pretty happy with it. With water injection, I've been able to run 22 degrees initial timing and a peak of 20psi of boost.
