I finally figured out what fried my T5 computer, and like so many DIY projects, the mechanic on duty (me) caused it :(
It wasn't the wiring, fuses, or relays.
It wasn't the non-trionic injectors.
It wasn't an existing defect in the ECM.
The night before the ECM got all smoked up I opened up the transmission primary gearcase cover for a supposedly unrelated repair. One of the cover bolts holds the motor ground strap to the chassis, and I forgot to attach this when I put the cover back on. And I didn't test drive the car until later after I swapped the Aero injectors out. So all the sensors on the motor had a floating ground that was probably all over the place, which explains the poor running & eventual stalling. Then, when I cranked it over, all the starter juice when back up the ECM ground path (from the intake manifold ground location) and cooked the ground circuit in the ECM. Luckily in this case "fried" means lightly toasted, not charred.
I attached the engine ground strap, reinstalled the 9000 injectors and fired it up with the *toasty* Aero computer. Yeah! It runs and drives as before. Whew. On to the next battle!
