Different turbo perhaps, I am not sure. But the air box is less restrictive, the Viggen IC is used, the tubo compressor discharge silencer is not there, and the throttle body transision casting problem is gone. So the intake system is vastly improved. And all of that is nice, but nothing happens as far as more power is concerned without more boost. So the boost pressure will be higher too. Getting more boost is easy, but with a restrictive intake system, the boost can fall off at higher RPMs and the temperatures go up, so the HP is hard to get as the torque tapers off.

And the T5 used a boost pressure control set point. This trys to maintain a given pressure at wide open throttle (WOT). You might get this pressure at high RPMs, but the temeratures climb and the air mass flow rate drops, and toruqe suffers even if the turbo can maintain pressures.

With the T7, its WOT boost objective is to maintain an air mass density instead of just temperature. So the boost pressures are variable and the net intent is to get to a certain torque objective instead of just pressure. With the less restrictive intake, the temperatures don't climb as with the 185HP setups. It works very well. The T7 system also manages the turbo very effectively and the boost lag is vastly improved. That reduced turbo lag makes the vehicle much faster and that is a different aspect than HP. Power delayed is power denied!

The T7 uses different torque objectives for 1st, 2nd and higher gears, which is very effective.

The T5 has one objective for 1st and 2nd. This make 2nd gear about as exciting as 3rd. A T5 setup, with the usual mods and a MBC can be real scarey on 2nd gear! Danger of perma grins! A MBC with 1st gear take some effort to avoid wheel spin. Overall, with good tires, I think a properly modified 185HP engine with a MBC setup will be faster in 2nd gear than most stock T7 setups, including the Viggen. But thats a lame challenge with my 95SET in the scrap yard!
