I know this is a SAAB forum, and I LOVE my SAAB, but I have been asked about something near and dear to my heart by Craig. I hope the rest of you understand.
Besides the Saab 900c turbo convert, I currently own an all original 1979 limited edition 10'th anniversary T/A with the original Pontiac 400 (not an oldsmobile 403) and the stock close ratio 4 speed tranny. It is one of 1817 built, and I am sure most are done for. It is f'n amazing! There is nothing like torque, torque, and more torque. When I floor it you can feel the floor and frame flex. It is so much different than the Saab I drive. It actually corners and handles better.
I also own a 1975 Pontiac Grandville Brougham convertible with a 455 cid, 4bbl Rochester carb, and climate control a/c. I will probably be converting/adapting the MV 40 tranny to a 700R4 tranny for better mileage on long drives. (Yes, I will be getting a BOP adaptation plate). It gets about 10 gallons to the mile, but who cares.
The 1966 convertible 4 spped GTO with all options and a tripower is long gone. I dyno'ed the thing once and was just over 700 HP with just a blower (and 4 2bbl carbs). It had worked Ram air 4 heads of a '69, blower with side draft carbs to keep profile so low that the blower was not obvious, and eventually I switched to an MV41 tranny when I drag raced her for more than a weekend at a time. I ran a Strange engineering tranny after I exploded a Ford 9 inch. (I never ran the stock 10 bolt GM rear for fear of ruining the cars value after corkscrewing the original axles). I did the tranny conversion as the 4 speed was actually slower on the track, even after my afore mentioned mods, because shifting in a 4 speed losses powerand time while it is less of a problem in a (clutchless and bullet proof) GM auto. (I do not know if that holds true for Saabs). Thing did wheelies at speed. I would swap the 4 speed back in when I drove her around town as my daily driver. When I sold it I offered to slow it down a bit, but the family of the kid who bought it refused. I actually had them write and sign that they refused to slow it down on the bill of sale. It was so fast even without the blower (which was a special item that I sold seperately for a mint) that within a week the kid I sold it to drove through 2 trees and 2 telephone poles before the engine bisected his chest. That was almost 20 years ago.
Saabs are great fun for what they are. I love my Saab turbo convert, but there will never be anything like old Detroit muscle.
