my understanding of the closed loop operation is that it serves only emissions purposes. evidently the cat needs the fluctuations to operate properly. i was also told that running in open loop would improve milage as you can run stoich all the time instead of rich, lean, rich, lean,... i have not done a comparison yet, and haven't needed to. the wolf system is pretty easy to set up in that area though, set max and min sweep, o2 sensor is already attached to the system, set cut off values (load, rpm, tps, etc.) and then turn it on. when i first set it up, the ar was running pretty much like stock, sweeping through the range, but then i eralized it wasn't turning off on the dyno, so i dropped it out and other maps became more important.
mileage wise, i am around 290 miles at about a quarter tank, i never go much lower than that.
as far as the idle issue, are you using an idle control valve? i am using the stock one. to get it right, you need to bring the engine up to temp, pinch off an aic valve hose, an make sure the car idles steady by tuning the fuel and timing maps. when it is steady, open the aic line and use the valve settings to steady the idle. i still have some issues here and there, but it is getting better. time-consuming, but educational. i know more about the car and engine than i ever though i would.
the only wide band tuning i did was about 6 months or so ago before i left seattle. since then i have only been donig street tuning with the stock o2 sensor and a/f gauge, which IMHO is all you need for street applications in normal conditions(at least i haven't hit a point were the proce of a wide band is justified for me). wot runs are best kept on the dyno and with a wide band.
the process goes on...:)
