Question about 900C transfer case and engine matching..

I figure the performance board is the only place where someone might ask this type of question. Hope someone out there might help.

I want to instal a turbo diesel into a 900c (or 9000, but preferably a 900c) for mileage purposes and to build a daily and cheap driver for my wife. Also seems like fun. Question becomes how does one line up and tension a non-Saab engine with a Saab transfer case, gear, & chain while at the same time attaching the engine to the 900c tranny? Seems like an adapter plate might help between engine and tranny as long as the throw of the crank shaft doesn't hit the sides of the tranny's oil pan. ALSO, it would be easier to use an engine that does not "stretch" the distance between the crank and the tranny's main gear. If one stretches that distance one needs to cut and extend the transfer case and chain and that ain't easy or good. Also seems that one would need to use a SAAB flywheel and clutch to allow for the use of the rod that fits the clutch and spins the chain.

What USED turbo diesel engines would be good? Volvo, Volkswagen, REO Speedwagon?

I guess the people who have adapted the 6 cylinder engines to 900c and 9000 trannies are the best and most knowledgeable in this area.
