Purpose of brace in VRK

I've been looking at the VRK for a while and am wondering about parts of it.
I can see how replacement of the two rubber bushing clamps would help make the steering rack more rigid, but what does the brace that mounts the steering side firewall clamp to the side engine bay wall do ? As far as I can tell, it can only serve to stabilize front-to-back deflection of the firewall. Can that really be ? Does the firewall actually deflect under steering loads ? Can't imagine what it would do in a serious crash then ! Actually, maybe I can...the footwell protection in the 900/9-3 was never rated well if I recall.
And if the steering wheel side of the firewall deflects, why doesn' the passenger side ? Is it just because the pinion box causes a bending torque on the firewall ?
I've ordered enough billet aluminium from Mcmaster-Carr to make replacement clamps if it ever warms up around here, and am just wondering if I should make a brace too. And out of what material. Abbott uses stainless, but that's likely overkill.
