"I am planning on taking the most economical route with the 9000 Aero turbo."
It's not my normal behaviour to shout but I still think you missed our point which is:
With the exception of the exhaust *housing* (which is a straight swap) YOU ALREADY HAVE THE EXACT SAME TURBO (and a much newer one to boot - last 9K Aero's were '98)!
Your 9-3's exhaust manifold has a round hole at the flange, where it is much bigger and square on the 9K Aero with the 6cm2 turbine housing. So swapping housings without extensive porting of the manifold (or buying the Abbott kit with a lot of redundant parts , since it was designed for T25/GT17 equipeed 900/9-3 models) would be a waste of time and effort. And arguably, trading a little top end for a little lag is not that great a reward for your time, money and effort should you go for that. Both turbo's will lose efficiency at around the same power level, so what's the point?
As turbo's go, your most cost effective solution is replacing it with an upgrade that was designed to fit this specific application. Everything else would be a waste of time unless you go all-out and shoot for BIG power(i.e ball-bearing GT30 or similar).
