The reason so many c900's ride on 16"Aero/Super Aero wheels is becasue they come so close to the ideal of having a subtly updated version of the original style wheels. The 900 Turbo is an '80s performance icon, and most of us don't care for the obvious style clash of having 21st century wheels under it.
That, and 95% of aftermarket wheel designs seem to be catering to an audience that likes to stand out for the sake of it. I don't know about the States, but over here you'd be pigeonholed into a certain demographic category... A motorsport-oriented, purposeful design like the BBS Y-spoke and its derivatives (see GM) looks good under most cars, but there's not an awful lot out there for the 4x108 bolt pattern with the correct offset and center hole dia, and those that are are prohibitively expensive ( I mean $800 a corner for GM's 18's - I had a full race engine - at least the bottom end :-) built for under the price of a set, including forged Cosworth pistons, shotpeened crank and rods, and piston cooling oil jets in the block). The sight (and sound :-) of that raises my pulse a lot more than all kinds of fancy wheels, weird colours or useless body addenda.
The bottom line is that our choice of car makes us stand out already, so we tend to spend our mney on performance rather than 'look different'...
Now if you had a Golf in Europe, or a Civic in the States...
