Back 25 years ago, regular oils weren't as good as they are now. Heavy sludging/deposits was not unusual in high mileage engines. Synthetic would clean, and bad gaskets/seals would become evident. No synthetic will attack any seals/gaskets.
This has not really been a great problem for the past 10-15 years. However, I recommend using a good engine flush (such as made by AMSOIL or BG) before changing a high mileage engine to synthetic. If you don't, or won't, flush, then plan on changing the oil filter after a couple thousand miles and maybe dropping the first batch of synthetic after 4-5,000 miles.
Having said that, if I looked under the oil filler cap and could see an inch of sludge, I'd beat you away with a big stick rather than sell you an oil change<g>
