I think so, but I think that's actually a factor of two things. Remember that -87 wheels have a common +40mm offset (more inboard) whereas 88+ wheels have a common +33mm offset (more outboard). I haven't measured, but that *leads* me to believe that the actual axle width is narrower on later cars. I have no proof, but as you say the track stayed the same. If that's the case, and the factory offsets changed, the only explanation I can come up with is the axle got narrower. Perhaps, as Ubipa states, the '91 cars returned to the original width... I dunno. :)
I *hope* they're the same... otherwise, my new wheels won't fit on my SPG. :)
