gearset shot peening

The gearset hardening (via shot peen) was quite expensive. You can count on $40 per piece if there are not any 'issues' like small cracks, defective surfaces, whatever. The minimum parts to have hardened are these:
Ring Gear
Pinion Gear
Cluster Gear
Second Gear
Third Gear
But when I sent mine in, there was a slight communications error with the pricing and what to send, so I sent the following:
Ring and Pinion, Cluster Gear*
1st*, 2nd*, 3rd*, 4th*, Reverse*, Reverse Slider
1/2 and 3/4 shift muffs, 1/2 and 3/4 hubs
Input shaft and Input gear
Top and Bottom Sprockets
That is 17 pieces, almost every rotating part in the box! The asterisks are gears that had small imperfections that were fixed/repaired during the process (and magnafluxed after to verify no defects).
Ideally you would start with a brand new cluster gear and 3rd gear, and have those shot-peened also, but I just shot-peened the existing used gearset.
As for longevity, my only reference point is this: the gears in my 1988 gearbox that blew up had 315,000+ miles on them and had no strengthening at all. The gears in this 1993 box all have been renewed with harder surfaces that will be more fatigue resistant, and they are slightly wider also (more load carrying capacity). In addition the lower ratio chain sprockets overdrive the gears somewhat, which reduces the torque loads (along with the higher ratio 9:35 tooth pinoin and ring gears). Overall I'm optimistic, but I don't think that this box will be unbreakable :)
