s'pose u could calculate it with a timing light, mityvac, & feeler gauges:
1. measure static timing with capsule in car, then, with mityvac on capsule, *pump* 'er up with some pressure & measure timing at max retard.
static timing - max retard = total retard.
2. now, remove capsule from dist. with a stack of feeler gauges, measure distance between the point on the arm that hits the stop and the stop itself (the stop is the round protrusion in the pic below; the arm is oriented perpindicularly to the stop and has the hole at the end).
total distance / total retard = distance per degree of retard.
now you know how much to grind off per degree of extra advance. for example, if you grind off the equivalent of two degrees retard on the stop (use a caliper to measure), you'll be able to run two more degrees of initial advance (and, thus, two degrees more total advance).
of course, i haven't actually done this, so, you know, ymmv. which, as you also know (because this is the 'net), may be a lot.
