Hey all,
After talking to a few people here on TSN and calling some SAAB mechanics, it sounds like my problem isn't a blown headgasket, even though it had slightly the same symptoms.
Here's the story...
I was doing about 65mph, went to pass a tractor trailer on my way to SAABs@Carlilse this past Saturday, boost climbs up to about 10 PSI, and *POP*. I immediatly let off the throttle, put it in neutral, the engine didn't stall out like I had expected it to, and I coasted over to the shoulder, turned off the engine, and started looking for a popped off intercooler hose. There wasn't anything that popped off. It sounded like the noise was from the passenger side front area. I started the car back up, it was fine, so I know it wasn't a hose, especially after checking them ten times. Oil in the coolant, so I thought it was a headgasket. That didn't explain the LOUD pop though.
I pulled out, hoping everything would be fine. Below 3K RPMs everything is like stock. As soon as the turbo starts to spool (still in the white of the turbo gauge, no PSI readings on the aftermarket boost gauge) it makes a loud humming, as if it's really having trouble trying to spool. I couldn't get the car to go any faster than 55mph because as soon as the turbo would want to kick in, the horrendous humming would start up.
Others with the same turbo I have (Garrett T3-60 w/360 thrust bearing) had similiar problems. The whole center section just blew up, and it allows the oil to creep into the coolant. This would explain the loud pop, the humming, and the difficulty/not being able to boost at all.
I had this turbo installed early January, and basically have only been able to drive it for about 15-20 days since I leave my car in Hershey, PA and only drive it on the few weekends I come home from college in Savannah GA. The turbo should definatly not be toast before it even sees one month of use. Which means, it's time for me to hand in this turbo and get another one.
Here's basically my two options.
I hand in my T3-60 and get another one exactly like it with no money exhanged, except the 2nd day air shipping rates.
-OR-
I hand in the T3-60 and get a Mitsubishi TE-05 16g w/upgraded thrust bearing for the extra cost of the Mitsibishi (probably around $100-$300).
I'm not really sure what to do here. My car is in Hershey, PA getting ready to get towed to a SAAB shop so they can remove the turbo and send it out for a new one, which should hopefully all be installed when I get home in two weeks.
Any help appreciated!
I'd like to hear your thoughts,
Thanks,
Taylor
