As we had '84 T16's over here (with starter motor on the exhaust side) I believe there should be no problems, as long as you have the 16 v timing gear (both camshaft and crankshaft sprockets, timing chain, guides and tensioner), timing cover, right side engine mount and power steering pump (including reservoir). With the 8v pistons and the 2.1 head (48cc combustion chambers vs. 42 cc for both the 8v head and the '85 16v, and 46 cc for the '86-'93 2.0 16v head) the static compression ratio will drop however, probably into the 7.5:1 range.
Of course, the engine has to come out in order to install the 16v timing gear, but I beleive you were going to do that anyway...
