I have a dawes MBC valve, though i have not yet installed it (project 85900T in progress) i am to understand that it goes in-line from the turbo compressor-housing to wastegate. There is a spring and ball inside the valve that, when under boost pressure, pushes the ball on the spring allowing over boost to blow off through a small hole right before it enters the wastegate.
MBC by-passes the APC valve/controls and allows for a more reliable control of boost while ruducing turbo lag. it also allows for more accurate performance, but at the risk of your engines safety, cause you have eliminated the knock sensor (an APC sensor that kills boost if your engine starts to ping) which helps prevent precombustion.
Another pro to MBC is that there are no "tweakings" to be done or expen$ive electronic compents to worry about when trying to trouble shoot performance issues.
I'm sure many of you will argue that the APC system is superior. But I would prefer MBC for any turbo.
