I use scraps of 2x10 or 2x6 wood left over from my garage construction to drive up on. I drive most of the way into the garage, put the wood in front of the front wheel, get back in the car and drive up onto the wood pieces. They are cleaner and less sharp than an old set of grooved and/or rusty discs, and easier to kick into the corner when you are done.
For tyler, the rears can be done without a spring compressor. Without a lift, it takes time. Took me a whole evening to do the rears on my 88 900T. (replaced both shocks and springs). I had took the car to professionals for the front, and it was less than 2 hours of labor. You might find that the bolts holding the shocks in place might be rusted or seized, otherwise, it's not difficult for the rears anyway.
If you do not have a creeper, it is good to have some cardboard to put on the floor. You can later reuse the cardboard to protect your floor when changing oil filters.
